PAHOKEE, Fla. (CBS12) — An investigation is underway after an apartment fire in Pahokee forced 28 people out of their homes, including 17 children.

Palm Beach County Fire Rescue said flames broke out at Doveland Villas & Apartments off Doveland Drive just after 4 p.m. on Tuesday. Officials say someone called 911 after noticing smoke coming from the building.

Firefighters rushed to the scene within three minutes and found flames shooting out of the second floor of the eight-unit apartment building. Heavy, black smoke was pouring out of the window.

"It was dark, black ashes and I was hoping everyone was out the house," said 12-year-old Roger Jones who saw the smoke from his home across the street.

Fortunately, all residents had evacuated safely before the firefighters began their aggressive fire attack and conducted a search for anyone else inside.

Firefighters said that they battled through zero visibility conditions until they managed to bring the flames under control. Once the fire was contained, they said that they used powerful fans to help clear the thick smoke from the building.

Antwan Johnson, 22, and his family live in the apartment next door to his uncle's, the one that caught fire.

"It was just smoke everywhere," Johnson said. "My little brother was running down the stairs, screaming and crying. It was actually real scary because you never know what could've happen or what kids was in that, and they had a 9-month-old baby too."

The Johnson family is staying with friends for now. They're thankful no one was hurt.

"Just thank God that everybody did get out safe," Johnson said.

While the fire was restricted to the initial apartment, it was reported that several other units experienced smoke and water damage.

The Red Cross is assisting the displaced residents. The Disaster Action Team from the Palm Beach Treasure Coast Chapter coordinated emergency aid for the six affected families, totaling 11 adults and 17 children.

Officials reported that the fire was fueled by a large number of contents inside the apartment.

In total, twelve front-line Palm Beach County Fire Rescue units responded to the scene.

Investigators say the fire was accidental. The cause of the fire is still under investigation by PBCFR’s in-house fire investigators.
