LAKE WORTH BEACH, Fla. — The growing homeless population at Bryant Park is raising safety and business concerns in downtown Lake Worth Beach. Business owners said the issue is starting to affect foot traffic, particularly during the slower summer months.

Andy Amoroso, who has owned The Tacky Tourist downtown for more than 30 years, said the situation has worsened over time. He recently intervened when a homeless individual aggressively approached three elderly women walking downtown.
"They panhandle, they get right up on people," Amoroso said. "And if you're a tourist or visitor, you don't feel safe."
He said his business is already slow during the summer—and that public safety concerns could push customers away.
City Commissioner Anthony Segrich said finding a solution isn't straightforward. A patchwork of legal guidelines—including local ordinances, PBSO policy, and a new state law—makes enforcement complicated.
A recently passed Florida statute now allows residents and business owners to sue local governments that knowingly permit overnight sleeping in public spaces. Lake Worth Beach prohibits camping in parks, but enforcement is limited. Meanwhile, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office (PBSO) must weigh the city's policies, state law, and its own internal rules before removing individuals.
"Our legal team has been working with their legal team to try to address trespass laws," Segrich said, "to weigh our ordinances versus PBSO policy versus state law."
Segrich said the city is still assessing how the state law will affect their ability to manage homelessness locally. He also emphasized the need for more individuals to be processed through the legal system, noting another challenge: ensuring the State Attorney's Office is willing to prosecute.
In the meantime, PBSO's Homeless Intervention Team continues its outreach efforts. Segrich said that long-term solutions will require a mix of legal clarity, support systems, and long-range planning.

Video submitted by a CBS12 viewer shows a silver sedan that crashed through the building under the name "We Buy Ugly Houses." The scene is shown to be taped off with yellow tape and large law enforcement presence around the building.
PBCFR says at the time of the crash, the building was closed and there was nobody inside.
The scene has been turned over to the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office for investigation.

Two decades after it closed, the historic Gulfstream Hotel in Lake Worth Beach is reopening to customers in the fall.
Ninety rooms in the hotel, at 1 Lake Ave., will be available, and 50 more rooms are coming in 2026, the hotel said in a news release. Planned are 50 apartments, a rooftop restaurant, bar, spa, gym and a 273-space parking garage once it's fully opened.
Nightly rates will start between $300 and $400, general manager Lawrence Cassenti said June 18. Customers can book now.
The grand hotel officially opened in 1925, costing $600,000. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. Renovation brought it back to life in 1998, but financial troubles shut it down again in 2005.
Construction started in 1923 as the El Nuevo Hotel. It was renamed as the Gulf Stream Hotel in March 1924 to give it "locality meaning," according to The Palm Beach Post. The company advertised bonds in The Post to help finance it, touting the new downtown attraction with the following:
When the infamous hurricane of 1928 swept through Palm Beach County, the hotel was the only Red Cross shelter in the Lake Worth area. About 500 people huddled inside while the storm brought 145 mph winds. It took off the hotel's roof, damaged the fifth and sixth floors and left up to 7 feet of sand in the lobby. The hotel closed after the stock market crash in 1929 and didn't reopen until seven years later.
